Joanna Koleth Workshops - Sat 11th November 2017

​Joanna Koleth is a dance artist-educator and certified BASI Pilates instructor. Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Dance) from Belhaven University. She is a former dance artist of Ad Deum II Dance Company (Houston, USA), and has performed in local and international collaborations with Balletbase (M’sia), Nibroll Dance Company/Mikuni Yanaihara (Japan), Un Yamada
Co. (Japan), PGK Dance Project (USA), Remnant Dance Theatre (Australia), San Diego Dance Theater, and somebodies dance theater (USA). She taught dance for the Annunciation Orthodox School Houston (USA), HELP International School (M’sia), Mont’Kiara International School (M’sia), PGK Dance Project’s Ascend program (USA), Project
Dance Penang, River Oaks School of Dancing (USA) and Youth With A Mission (Hong Kong). Her
fascination for new places and spaces has inspires her boundless pursuit of movement and creation.
She is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Dance at Hollins University (USA) in association with
The Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company, The University of Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt, and
Künstlerhaus Mousonturm Frankfurt (Germany).

Movement Improvisation

- Level: For dancers and non-dancers (must have a basic foundation of body-awareness)

DESCRIPTION: This workshop will enable participants to expand their compositional and choreographic
capacity, while encouraging them to find their own movement llanguage. In this workshop, participants will
learn the art of improvisation to unlock and expand the body’s movement potential. We will learn how to
access spatial, visual, and imaginative cues to create new and unfamiliar movement. Elements of
partnering and contact improvisation will be explored.
Joanna uses improvisation as an important aspect of her ongoing dance practice. She sees the body as a
writing tool and meshes a myriad of methods from her different dance experiences, including Forsythe’s
Improvisational Technologies and her background in classical, contemporary, and modern dance.

Contemporary Dance​
4.30pm - 6pm Sat 11th Nov 2017

- Level: Intermediate/Low-Advanced (90min class)
​
DESCRIPTION: This dance technique class will encourage participants to expand their spatial awareness
through their explorations of some key modern dance elements: the use of breath, groundedness,
suspension, contractions and release. The class will progress from floor to standing with an emphasis on
anatomically efficient movement. We will focus on a variety of linear and circular pathways, both in our
bodies (internally) and in the space (externally).
