The Principal

Teacher and choreographer Lee Lee Lan is a highly respected personality in the Malaysian dance scene. She founded the Federal Academy of Ballet in 1967 and has since trained many prominent professional dancers and dance teachers.
She first started dancing under Soonee Goh and Blossom Shek. She later trained under Ethel Foxcroft of England.
The First Asian Examiner for Ballet, Modern and Tap appointed by ISTD, Lee Lee Lan is a Fellow of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (London) in both the ballet and modern branches, and holds the Advanced Teachers’ Certificate from the Royal Academy of Dancing (London) and an Arts Degree from the University of Malaya. Her first choreographic works were seen in 4 musicals produced at the University of Malaya in the 60s. They were “West Side Story”, “Flower” “Drum Song” and “Show Boat”.
In the 70s she was actively choreographing and dancing for TV Malaysia and touring the country with her “Federal Ballet Group”.
With fresh ideas from working with Dame Ninnette De Valois in 1971 in London where she danced in Checkmate, and after a stint at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance in New York, Lee Lee Lan was inspired to embark on even more ambitious choreography; this culminated in a 3 Act Ballet entitled “Soraya”. First staged in 1981, °Soraya” was performed again in 1982 for the King.
Since 1984, as Artistic Director of the Kuala Lumpur Dance Theatre, Lee Lee Lan has led the Company to many performances in Japan, Korea, England, America and the Philippines.
Her choreography for a modern dance piece won a prize at the Saitama Choreographic Competition in Tokyo in 1986.
She is the founder President of the Dance Society of Malaysia.
She was Vice-President of the World Dance Alliance (AP) and committee member of CIOFF Malaysia and has received the Avon Women of Distinction Award as well as the ISTD Overseas Award and The Saitama Choreographic prize.
